The Over Lock 3D model is a solo project, where I was using Autodesk Maya, Adobe Substance 3D Painter and Adobe Photoshop. I was using a real overlock machine as reference, with the goal to make two realistic looking twins. The high poly model was made for rendering pictures and contains about 840 k triangles, while the low poly version was made to be used in a VR experience (see the Over Lock VR project), and contains about 21 k triangles.
I used Maya for all the modelling and to render pictures, Substance Painter to make the textures, and Photoshop to make the labels and masks for the textures to the thread spools. See the video below for a more thorough walkthrough of the process.
The two models looks quite similar despite the difference in polycount, the main difference is that the high poly model appears shinier and has smoother corners. Use the slideshow to compare the final models with each other.
